New Music: When You Think No One Can Hear You

Birthday Pandeiro!

Finally done! This is a little ditty I wrote to try to cure myself of stage fright. I think it might have worked. This is my first piece not in 4/4 time (it’s in 6/8). Added bonus: it’s under 4 minutes! The rhythm is based off a finger snap and thigh slap pattern which is still in the mix.

New to this piece are some instruments came my way during my last birthday a couple of months ago, including the pandeiro pictured above, which makes both boomy and clattery noises. More birthday presents used on this song are a washboard (played with thimble) and a Little Martin acoustic-electric guitar. I also used the wood shaker. Bass and drum set parts are played with the MIDI controller. Hope you enjoy!

When You Think No One Can Hear You

Words and music by Andee Joyce

Your microphone’s on and you’ve practiced all your tunes
But once you’re facing all those scary people in the room
You become the singing frog in that cartoon
All that comes out is a croak
But imagine there’s an angel on your shoulder
Whispering this is what you were meant to do
You know how, with each note you’ll get bolder
It’s your voice, it won’t disappear on you

‘Cause when you think no one can hear you
Oh whoa, the magical sounds you can make
When you think no one can hear you
Oh whoa, there’s no such thing as a mistake

You get in the shower later and replay the entire scene
You open your mouth and now the notes all come out nice and clean
Feel the water on your head and breathe in all that steam
Steam’s good for singing, it’s no joke
All alone, you feel your own power
All alone, you could light up Carnegie Hall
All alone, the whole world is your shower
All alone, you can do it all

‘Cause when you think no one can hear you
Oh whoa, the magical sounds you can make
When you think no one can hear you
Oh whoa, your musical soul is awake

Sing of good things, sing of bad things
Sing of things that are both good and bad
Sing of anything you have trouble holding in
‘Cause if you feel it and you know it
Whether or not you choose to show it
Either way, you win

‘Cause when you think no one can hear you
Oh whoa, the magical sounds you can make
When you think no one can hear you
Oh whoa, there’s no such thing as a mistake

When you think, when you think, when you think
No one can hear you, hear you, hear you
Oh whoa, the magical sounds you can make
When you think no one can hear you
Oh whoa, your musical soul is awake
